300 Words: Zombie Cats
>I didn't believe in Zombie Cats until one started four in the morning and she decided to go outside, so she could stare up into the night sky. i went with her. she lived out in the suburbs, far enough from the main roads so that the street-lamp-glare didn't entirely obscure the view; when i put on my glasses, i could see that some stars were differently coloured from the others. i'd never noticed that before. we twirled around and fell over dizzily for a few minutes, then got bored with that and walked up the dark suburban road, along the white line up the middle of the street, like tightrope walkers. we had no idea where we were going, but we agreed to stop when the white line ran out, which happened about a hundred yards away from her house. we stood there for a moment, listening to the distant traffic sounds and the possums in the trees. she pointed at something behind me. i thought it might have been an approaching car, but it was two of her cats. they'd followed us and were pacing back and forth across the road in an agitated fashion. they calmed down only when we started back towards her house. they led the way, occasionally glancing back to make sure that we hadn't got lost. "Where's -" i asked, about to name her third cat. as i spoke, he appeared out of the trees to our left and herded us onward. i suppose they could tell that neither of us was in the most stable of mental states and that we needed to be taken care of as if we were their kittens; they didn't disperse until we reached home and put their food on the verandah. nikolai |
